This vibrant and whimsical depiction is part of a series of twenty illustrations Henri Matisse crafted for his revolutionary book, "Jazz." These illustrations originated from maquettes, where Matisse skillfully arranged cut and pasted colored papers. The images were then reproduced using the "pochoir" stencil technique. In this particular artwork, the mythical figure Icarus takes on a simplified form, gracefully suspended against a rich royal blue night sky. Matisse's departure into flat, abstract shapes and expansive swaths of pure color signaled a pivotal shift in his later artistic endeavors, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on the evolution of art. This transformative style would go on to influence "hard-edge" artists of the 1960s, including luminaries such as Ellsworth Kelly and Al Held.
