Rublev’s renowned icon symbolically portrays the Genesis story of three angels visiting Abraham and Sarah. The figures are depicted with equal dignity, suggesting no hierarchical distinction and representing the three persons of the Holy Trinity. However, the specific identities and roles of each figure remain ambiguous. This ambiguity reflects the absence of a physical incarnation of God the Father on earth, adding to the image’s symbolic nature. Although created in the early 15th century, the icon was not discovered until 1904 and has since become one of the most celebrated works in Russian art history. The use of blue and gold in the angels’ garments alludes to divine transcendence and omnipotence, reinforcing the theological significance of the scene. Due to its profound meaning, this motif appears frequently in other Orthodox icons from the same period.
